Horatio Alger, Jr.: Who Is He?

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Horatio Alger, Jr., a prolific writer, encouraged readers to put in effort and persevere in the face of hardship. All 128 of Alger’s books show how anyone can accomplish their goals by being self-motivated and having a “can-do” attitude, despite obstacles.

Alger’s childhood experiences in Massachusetts in the early to mid-20th century served as inspiration for his writings. Alger, the eldest of five children and the son of a struggling minister from a small New England town, was born. Due to his severe asthma, his father tutored him at home until he was 10 years old.

When Alger was accepted to Harvard in 1848 at the age of 16, he worked odd jobs to help pay for his education. He was hired by a small newspaper because he wanted to write after graduation.

Alger, however, was not successful right away.

He initially found it difficult to support himself as a writer and made the decision to enroll in teacher preparation courses at a boarding school for men only. He continued to write while he was a teacher, earning $1 to $2 per piece. But eventually, he found some success, and Bertha’s Christmas Vision, his debut book, was released. Nothing happened in the following year.

Alger made the decision to return to Harvard and pursue a degree in religion as a result of the book Nothing to Do’s underwhelming sales. During this time, he continued to write, albeit under a pen name. After finishing his studies, he spent months traveling throughout Europe and documenting the experience in essays that were later made public.

After that, Alger started reading children’s novels. Frank’s Campaign, about a young boy who must work to pay the farm’s mortgage while his father is away fighting in the American Civil War, was his debut book, published in 1864.
