  • Program Period: The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program funds up to three years of your graduate education; if your degree program is longer than three years — such as an MD or PhD program, or a Stanford dual- or joint-degree program — your Stanford home department will fund the remainder of your education to the extent consistent with its standard funding commitment for that program.

Stanford University Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The following are the eligibility requirements for Stanford University Scholarships:

  • Languages required: English
  • Eligible Countries: The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is open to all countries across the world.
  • For enrollment in 2022, a first/degree bachelor’s earned in 2015 or later is required.
  • You are eligible to apply if you apply within four years of receiving your first/degree bachelor’s and enroll within five years.
  • You must have first-step mental acuity, seek knowledge and new experiences, be creative, make sense of ambiguous situations, and be able to hold a contrarian or dissenting viewpoint.
  • Not only must you complete your Knight-Hennessy Scholars application, but you must also complete the entire application process, which includes any standardized tests required by your graduate degree program (GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, etc.) and, if necessary, an English proficiency test.
  • You must be ambitious in the greatest possible way, driven to improve yourself, and willing to take chances. Self-aware, perseveres, and recovers from adversity. Personally, I am humble and friendly, inclusive, respects difference, cares about and helps others, and have a low ego.
  • To study at Stanford, you must be fluent in English (listening, reading, speaking, and writing). Most graduate programs at Stanford require a TOEFL score of 100iBT or 600PBT. The TOEFL is accepted by all

  • To begin, you must apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program in addition to enrolling to Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Each incoming Knight-Hennessy Scholar must be a first-year student in a Stanford graduate program, such as the DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD. There are no discipline or program quotas.

How Do I Apply for Scholarships at Stanford University?

To be considered for this scholarship, please follow the steps outlined below:

(1) You must first create an account and begin your online application.

(2) You must complete and submit the online admissions application (including personal and academic information, etc.). Basic biographic and demographic information, as well as descriptions of your activities and interests, will be requested by the university.

(3) The following documents must be submitted:

  • For each university you attended for an academic year or longer, include an unofficial or self-reported transcript documenting your academic performance in college and, if relevant, graduate school. You may use the self-reported transcript template if you are unable to offer an unofficial transcript. If relevant, your transcript must indicate the degree conferred as well as the date of conferral. Transcripts from study-abroad experiences are not required if the credits are already on your transcript.
  • You will submit a résumé outlining your intellectual, personal, and professional background and achievements. One page for every decade of experience after high school is our rule.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Essay (You may submit a total of 1,750 words for both essays combined) include the following:
  • Join the dots. What influences in your life have shaped you?
  • How will you go about fulfilling your life’s purpose? What role will your Stanford education and Knight-Hennessy Scholars experience play in this?
  • There are two quick answer responses: Please tell us eight unlikely facts about yourself. Please identify three goals/objectives that you are currently working toward (admission to Stanford and/or selection as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar do not count as one of those goals).
  • Your video tale must be no longer than two minutes in length. It’s fine if you only need 30 seconds to respond. There is no expectation or responsibility on your part to talk for the entire allotted time.
